Vintage racing and raising money for children's charities will take center stage this weekend during the Classic Sports Racing Group's 5th annual Charity Challenge at Infineon Raceway, Oct. 10-12. All proceeds from the race weekend will benefit Sonoma County youth groups through Speedway Children's Charities, the charitable arm of Infineon Raceway.
The weekend will feature two days of exciting vintage racing on Infineon Raceway's 12-turn, 2.52-mile road course, as well as several non-racing benefit events, including a charity dinner at Viansa Winery on Friday, Oct. 10, live and silent auctions throughout the weekend and Charity Ride-Arounds on the Sonoma Valley road course. With these events, CSRG has raised more than $367,000 over the last four years.
"This event has turned into a win/win situation for everyone involved," said Dan Radowicz, club administrator for CSRG. "The participants have a great weekend racing in the wine county and all of the money raised is the result of CSRG vintage racers reaching into their pockets to help. No one's entry fee money is used; it's all accomplished through their generous personal donations."
One of the more popular events of the race weekend will be the Charity Ride-Arounds. For a $75-$100 donation to Speedway Children's Charities, race fans can take a thrilling, three-lap ride around the world-famous road course with one of the competitors in a historic stock car, CanAm sports racer or other vintage car.
Many of the competitors are from the Bay Area, including Jeff Abramson (Alamo, 1965 Shelby GT 350), Dennis Adair (Fairfield, 1956 Elva Mk 1), John Anderson (Sebastopol, 1977 Wolf WR4 F-1); Danny Baker (San Francisco, 1983 Williams FW08); Dann Boeschen (St. Helena, 1966 Porsche 906); Mary and Richard Davis (Sacramento, 1964 Crusader FV); Art Hebert (Larkspur, 1963 Lola Mk5 F-Jr.); Dan Payne (Petaluma, 1963 Corvette) and Bob Squire (Walnut Creek, 1914 Ford Model T).
Practice, qualifying and main events will be featured both Saturday and Sunday for all eight racing groups. Tickets for the CSRG Charity Challenge are $20 for an adult weekend pass and $10 for a youth pass (ages 10-15). Children 9 and under are free. Parking is free.
